BATMAN FRIDAY

Why We Love Detective Comics

Bat-Mite!

Once upon a time, in a magical era known as the early 1960s, there was an imp who became obsessed with Bat-Man. He was know as Bat-Mite, and he appeared a bunch of times in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He did stuff like this:

(I decided it was easier to show the cover than to try to explain it. Yeesh! Just what in the Heck is going on there!?)

He got a crush on Bat-Woman. (Which was just what you did if you appeared in the Bat-Man comics of the time.) He got a crush on Bat-Girl. (Not Barbara Gordon. The other Bat-Girl. Er, I mean, the FIRST other Bat-Girl.) He sometimes rode around on Ace, the Bat-Hound. He teamed up with Mr. Mxyzptlk and the two of them made mischief for both Bat-Man and Superman in the pages of "World's Finest."

And then, it was 1964, and John F. Kennedy was dead, and the Beatles were here, and somebody decided there had to be a "New Look" Batman, and there was just no place for Bat-Mite anymore.

Say a prayer for Bat-Mite.

Do not go gently into that dark night, little friend. There are those of us who miss you.
