MEANWHILE ... IN OIL-RICH VENEZUELA ...
KEEP AN EYE ON WHAT'S GOING ON IN VENEZUELA!
I don't have time to write much about what's going on in Venezuela. But I think MMC readers should know that the United States is very hostile to the democratically elected government of Hugo Chavez. Why? Well, Venezuela has a lot of oil (Venezuela started OPEC), and Chavez thinks that more of the people of the nation should benefit from the nation's oil wealth. And the United States would prefer that the white elite of Venezuela remain in control because of the (Ahem) mutually beneficial deals U.S. oil companies have enjoyed with Venezuela in the past. Some people think that the U.S. helped the opposition in the coup that temporarily ousted Chavez in 2002. (Why are people so suspicious? Just because we've interfered in Latin American politics about 100 times since 1900.)
Here's a link that will help you get started on understanding the importance of Venezuela. Lord knows the corporate media won't help you at all!
I also recommend www.gregpalast.com for anyone who has qualms about the effectiveness and reliability of the corporate media.
